Indiana: HB 1011 Dead

Per the Patients Rights Action Fund, Indiana bill, HB 1011, is dead for the season and will not carry over to the new year.

Bill HB 1011, titled "End of Life Options," has been introduced in the Indiana House of Representatives. The bill seeks to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia, as those terms are traditionally defined. The bill terms these practices "medical aid in dying."

Proponents claim that legalization will give individuals "choice." But whose choice will it be?

Assisting persons can have their own agendas, for example, an adult son wanting an early inheritance or fearing that his parents will remove him from their wills if he doesn't act quickly.

In states where assisted suicide and euthanasia are legal, laws are stacked against the individual with the most obvious reason being a complete lack of required oversight at the death.

No witness, not even a doctor is required to be present at the death.

If the individual objects or struggles against administration of the lethal dose, would anyone other than the person administering the lethal dose, even know?

In the fine print, these laws allow assisted suicide and euthanasia as those terms are traditionally defined, .
